Who You Are Matters

Q. Describe where you come from?

A. “I come from the other side of the world” is what I usually tell people.  It works for people in Hong Kong since I was born in Los Angeles but also for people in Los Angeles since I was raised in Hong Kong.

Q. Tell me where you're going

A. As of this moment, I am not going anywhere outside of my house because of COVID-19, though I do hope to be able to travel soon. Aside from that, I also hope to enter an industry that encompasses elements from both finance and technology. Perhaps that could mean exploring the fintech or venture capital spaces in the future.

Q. Tell me how you plan to get there?

A. To travel, I will take an airplane. For my career path, that may be a bit more complicated. Right now, I co-own an entertainment company in Hong Kong and continue to look for investment opportunities in said sector alongside f&b. While I enjoy doing this, I continue to seek to find a job in finance upon graduation such that I may gain the exposure and experience necessary to get to where I want.

Q. How are you LIKE your parents?

A. The obvious answer: my facial features. The not so obvious answer: the way that I conduct myself. I have found that a lot of the way I speak and think has been influenced by my parents. In addition, a relatively recent discovery I’ve made is my surprisingly high tolerance towards spicy food. Although I did try a “demon-level” spicy ramen today and I am still regretting it 4 hours later.

Q.Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?

A. Honestly, nobody has ever given me much pressure to meet their expectations. With that being said, I do believe that adds pressure on myself to make sure I maintain a good work ethic and reachable goals. In retrospect, I realize this has sometimes led to me setting unnecessarily high standards that adds unnecessary pressure to myself (i.e. attaining a certain GPA or hitting below a certain score in golf…).

Q. Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?

A. I look up to a lot of elite athletes as role models. Specifically, I take after athletes like Kobe and Tiger for their work ethic and their ability to remain calm under pressure. Although I don’t have the talent to play these sports on a competitive level, I continue to believe there is still a lot value in mimicking these athlete’s mindsets to apply to everyday life.

Q. Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?

A. In accordance with the Chinese zodiac, I feel most connected to tigers as I was born in the year of the tiger (1998). I've always been proud to be associated with tigers, but whether or not I carry similar traits to them (ferocious, confident...) is questionable.

Q. Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.

A. I remember going to camp once and discovering a plant which folds into itself whenever someone touches it. I was extremely fascinated at the time by the plant’s behaviour. Officially, I’ve now learnt that this plant is called mimosa pudica, a.k.a the sleepy plant. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find this plant on my outings thereafter.

Q. Tripod of Basic Personality

A. Rising Sign is in 26 Degrees Cancer, Sun is in 21 Degrees Scorpio, Moon is in 27 Degrees Virgo.

  1. Hey Brian! It was nice getting to know you in the breakout room during lecture. I like all the pictures you included - it makes the post more interesting! I like how your wild animal is the tiger because of the Chinese zodiac - mine is the rabbit (1999) and my traits are pretty much the exact opposite of the tiger's!

  4. Hey Brian! Thanks for your post and all the detailed pictures you included along with it. I really connected to what you said about how Kobe Bryant and other athletes are your role models. Today would have actually been Kobe's 42nd birthday. I also really admire him for his hard work, perseverance, and dedication to the game. I agree that it is very important to stay calm under pressure.
